AI Tools for Readers

Cartoon headed “New Scanners. Old Scoring Rules.” Steve, wearing a Heart CEO badge, stands between a 1990 scanner and a modern one labelled Today, his hand on a dial set to “1990 compatibility mode.” Below: “The scanner has moved on. The scoring standard takes longer.”

I didn’t use AI to replace my doctors. I used it to understand them.

It started small. I used ChatGPT to help me write questions to a cardiologist through his patient portal. He never answered, which told me something too. Then I found I could upload my lab results and scan reports and get plain-English explanations, often before the official versions arrived. I could ask follow-up questions at 11 p.m. without feeling like I was wasting anyone’s time.

Over two years, AI became my research partner. It explained the difference between how narrow an artery looks and how much blood is actually getting through. It pointed me to the major trials on stents in stable patients when two cardiologists gave me opposite advice. It told me the scanner I was scheduled for was good, but that a newer 640-slice scanner with AI analysis existed, and it helped me find one at UC Davis Health. I checked important answers across ChatGPT, Claude, Grok, and Gemini, because no single tool is always right.

The prompts below are the kinds of questions that helped me most. Copy them, fill in the brackets, and use them to walk into your next appointment better prepared. One rule I always followed: remove your name, birth date, and anything else that identifies you before uploading medical records.

These prompts are tools for understanding, not substitutes for medical care. AI can be confidently wrong, so verify important answers, cross-check with a second AI tool, and always make decisions together with a qualified physician.
